Chrissy Teigen has revealed that her six-year-old son, Miles, has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Teigen, who shares four children with her husband, EGOT-winner John Legend, disclosed their son’s condition on Instagram. The announcement came after some followers noticed Miles wearing a diabetes monitor in a photo taken with Teigen and his sister, Luna, 8, at the Paris Olympics.
“A lot of you noticed something a little special about a photo I posted a few days ago,” Teigen wrote. “You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible.”
Miles was diagnosed just a few weeks ago while hospitalized for an unrelated infection. Doctors noticed irregularities in his blood tests, leading to the discovery of his type 1 diabetes.
“The doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests. I’ve learned since then that this is how so many young children end up being diagnosed with type-1 – going to the hospital for something completely different,” Teigen explained. “After more testing, we learned he is in the ‘honeymoon period’ of a lifetime of T1.”
This week, Miles received his first insulin shot, and Teigen expressed gratitude for the support and medical care they have received.
“Here we go! A different, new world for us and we are certainly learning so much on the fly,” she added.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels due to insufficient insulin production. Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, noted that it is often diagnosed in children, once commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes mellitus.
Teigen thanked everyone for their support, stating that it means a lot to Miles to know he is not alone.
“It helps miles so much to know so many other people are going through the same thing,” she wrote, “and he is not alone.”
