Guernsey is set to introduce a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the management of type 2 diabetes, with a new program funded by a local charity.
Diabetes Guernsey has announced its support for the Desmond program, which stands for Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed. This well-established initiative, widely used within the NHS, will be rolled out in Guernsey starting November.
Matt Ferguson, Chairman of Diabetes Guernsey, discussed the upcoming program during an interview with BBC Radio Guernsey. He detailed that the Desmond program would be available through referrals from general practitioners (GPs) and GP nurses.
According to Ferguson, the Desmond program will offer crucial education on dietary management for individuals living with type 2 diabetes. He highlighted that similar programs have been implemented successfully in various small jurisdictions, including the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, and Jersey, showing promising results in self-management rates.
“This program provides an additional layer of care for those with type 2 diabetes,” Ferguson noted. “Good management leads to fewer complications, which is always beneficial.”
The Desmond program will include both in-person courses and accessible online modules, allowing for greater convenience and flexibility for participants.
Ferguson emphasized the program’s goal to improve the well-being of individuals with type 2 diabetes. “Effective control of blood sugar levels leads to a better sense of well-being,” he explained. “By managing the condition better, individuals will feel better about themselves, creating a win-win situation for everyone involved.”
The rollout of Desmond in Guernsey promises to offer valuable support and improved outcomes for those managing type 2 diabetes.
