The Breakthrough T1D Walk, an annual fundraising event supporting Type 1 diabetes research and education, is set to take place on August 17 at the Mylan Park track and field complex in Morgantown. This year’s walk promises to build on the success of its inaugural event.
Organizational Details:
Emily Smaniotto, Diabetes Education Center coordinator at WVU Medicine, is leading the coordination of this year’s event. WVU Medicine is a key sponsor of the walk. The event benefits Breakthrough T1D, previously known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The rebranding reflects a broader commitment to all individuals living with Type 1 diabetes.
Breakthrough T1D provides educational materials to WVU Medicine, which are distributed at WVU Medicine Children’s to assist newly diagnosed patients.
Past Achievements and Goals:
Last year’s walk set a national record for community fundraising, raising over $110,000. The event saw a turnout of more than 350 participants, far exceeding the 120 registered. This year, the organizers aim to increase participation to 500 and set a fundraising goal of $150,000. As of Tuesday afternoon, the event had raised $89,679.
Event Details:
The walk will cover a distance of 2 miles and will feature a variety of activities, including free beverages and snacks, food trucks, a DJ, raffle tables, and a dunk tank. Registration and activities will commence at 10 a.m., with the opening ceremony starting at 11 a.m., followed by the parade and walk at 11:30 a.m.
