A group of public health students from Assistant Professor Sandra Darfour-Oduro’s Contemporary Health course recently visited Cone Health’s Nutrition and Diabetes Lifestyle Center in Burlington. The visit provided a hands-on learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of diabetes and its management.
Led by Phil Aubel, a registered dietitian at the center, the session offered students insights into various aspects of diabetes. Topics included the different types of diabetes, diagnostic criteria, factors influencing blood sugar levels, and effective interventions for managing the condition. Aubel emphasized the critical role of physical activity and maintaining a balanced diet in controlling blood sugar.
Darfour-Oduro’s course addresses contemporary health challenges both in the U.S. and globally. Students explore prominent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory illnesses, and diabetes. The curriculum highlights the significant impact these conditions have on global morbidity and mortality, along with their underlying risk factors.
This experiential learning visit underscores the program’s commitment to equipping students with practical knowledge to address pressing health issues.
