Managing diabetes can be overwhelming, and for many individuals living with the condition, the battle doesn’t stop with blood sugar levels. Diabetes fatigue is a common yet often overlooked symptom that affects a significant number of patients.
According to Northern Light Health, approximately 10% of adults in Maine are diagnosed with diabetes. While the physical symptoms of the condition are well-known, the emotional and mental toll can be equally challenging.
Dominique Uva, a nurse practitioner at the Diabetes-Endocrinology Clinic at Northern Light Inland Hospital, sheds light on what’s known as “diabetes fatigue.” She explains how this persistent exhaustion, which often goes beyond typical tiredness, significantly impacts the day-to-day lives of patients. Diabetes fatigue can stem from the constant need for blood sugar monitoring, medication management, and the mental strain of managing a chronic illness.
This condition not only drains energy but also affects a patient’s emotional well-being, leading to feelings of frustration, stress, and even depression.
Northern Light Health emphasizes the importance of addressing this fatigue as part of a comprehensive diabetes care plan, helping patients cope with both the physical and emotional aspects of their condition.
