The body’s regulation of blood sugar involves a delicate balance between several hormones and organs. As mentioned earlier, insulin is a key player in lowering blood sugar levels. When blood sugar rises, such as after consuming a carbohydrate-rich meal, the pancreas senses the increase and secretes insulin. Insulin binds to receptors on cells, allowing glucose to enter and be used for energy or stored for later use. On the other hand, when blood sugar levels start to drop, the pancreas releases another hormone called glucagon. Glucagon signals the liver to break down stored glycogen into glucose and release it into the bloodstream, increasing blood sugar levels. Additionally, other hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and growth hormone can also affect blood sugar levels, especially during times of stress or physical activity.

Fasting Blood Sugar Levels

Fasting blood sugar levels are measured after an overnight fast, usually for 8 to 12 hours. For a healthy adult without diabetes, the normal fasting blood sugar level is typically between 70 and 99 mg/dL. This range indicates that the body is effectively regulating glucose during the fasting state. A fasting blood sugar level within this range suggests that the pancreas is functioning properly and that the body’s cells are responding appropriately to insulin. For example, a person with a fasting blood sugar level of 85 mg/dL is within the normal range and is likely to have a good balance of glucose in the bloodstream, providing a steady supply of energy for the body’s functions.

Postprandial, or after-meal, blood sugar levels are also important to consider. After consuming a meal, blood sugar levels naturally rise as the body digests and absorbs the carbohydrates. In a healthy individual, the blood sugar level should return to the fasting range within a few hours. Generally, a 2-hour postprandial blood sugar level of less than 140 mg/dL is considered normal. However, if it exceeds 200 mg/dL, it may indicate diabetes. For instance, if a person eats a meal high in refined carbohydrates and their 2-hour postprandial blood sugar level is 160 mg/dL, it may be a sign of impaired glucose tolerance, and further evaluation may be needed to assess the risk of developing diabetes.

There are several methods of monitoring, including using a glucometer to measure blood glucose levels at home. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are also available, which provide real-time data on glucose levels throughout the day and night. By monitoring their blood sugar levels, individuals can make informed decisions about their diet, exercise, and medication management.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the foundation for managing blood sugar levels. This includes following a balanced diet rich in whole foods, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, and getting enough sleep.
