At the American Diabetes Association’s annual State of Diabetes event in Houston, experts and local business leaders gathered to discuss ways employers can better support workers managing diabetes. Held in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, this year’s event took place at the Junior League of Houston.
Reva Verma, CEO of Reneka Digital, served as one of the panelists, discussing how well-structured workplace wellness programs can significantly enhance employee well-being and productivity, benefiting both employers and workers. “When structured thoughtfully, these programs can create a win-win situation,” Verma said, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and ongoing management in mitigating the impact of diabetes.
Diabetes is a major health concern in Texas, where over 2.5 million adults are diabetic—approximately 11% of the adult population. In Harris County, the rate is even higher at 13%. Managing diabetes presents a significant financial burden as well, with the Texas Department of State Health Services reporting that diabetes costs the state $26 billion annually, including $18.9 billion in direct medical expenses. A key factor in rising costs is the tripling of insulin prices over the last two decades.
Verma encouraged employers to collaborate with employees to ensure access to essential health resources. One practical solution is the use of Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which can ease the financial strain of diabetes management. “Incorporating FSAs or wellness programs allows employees to cover out-of-pocket costs, ensuring they receive high-quality care while reducing overall costs,” Verma explained.
Additionally, mental health support is crucial for individuals with diabetes, who face daily challenges related to medication management, physical activity, and nutrition. Verma noted that people with diabetes often experience “diabetes burnout,” a state of physical and emotional exhaustion due to the constant demands of managing a chronic illness. Employers can play a critical role in alleviating this stress by providing mental health resources and fostering a supportive work environment.
The event underscored the importance of a collaborative approach between employers and employees to reduce both the health and financial burden of diabetes, improving quality of life for those affected.
