Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, will launch a complimentary six-week online Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) beginning September 12. The program is scheduled for Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Developed by Stanford University experts, the DSMP aims to assist participants in managing diabetes both physically and emotionally. The program is designed to impart crucial skills for lowering A1C levels and mitigating the risks and complications associated with diabetes.
Workshop Schedule:
- September 12
- September 19
- September 23
- October 3
- October 10
- October 17
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes. In Maryland, 10.5 percent of adults—approximately 500,000 people—are affected by diabetes, and about 34 percent (1.6 million) have prediabetes.
Participants in the DSMP will acquire strategies to enhance physical activity, make healthier food choices, and address the challenges of living with diabetes. The workshop will focus on improving eating habits, increasing physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight.
The program is designed to complement existing diabetic medical management services and has been shown to provide significant health benefits. Attendees will learn to sustain an active and fulfilling lifestyle while honing their problem-solving and decision-making skills.
The DSMP workshop is open to individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, or those caring for someone with diabetes.
