As people’s lifestyles change and the population ages, the prevalence of diabetes continues to rise. At present, the number of people with diabetes in China has exceeded 100 million, which has become the third largest health killer after cardiovascular diseases and tumors, seriously endangering the health of patients, and bringing a heavy burden to patients’ families and society.
Guo Lixin, chief physician of Beijing Hospital, made the remarks at a press conference held by the NHC to answer questions about whether diabetes can be inherited and who is more likely to get it.
Guo Lixin said that diabetes does have a certain relationship with genetics, and many studies have shown that if there is a family history of diabetes, or if there is diabetes in the immediate family, the risk of diabetes is significantly higher than that of the general population without a family history of diabetes. But in fact, the occurrence of diabetes is the result of a combination of factors, such as type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes have a certain genetic background, but the genetic background of type 2 diabetes is stronger.
Acquired factors play a very important role in the development of diabetes, the development of diabetes depends on two main factors, one is genetic factors, one is environmental factors. Genetic factors are difficult to change, but the onset and development of diabetes can be reduced by changing environmental factors.
What are the most important environmental factors for diabetes? Guo Lixin introduced, the first is the way of life. In lifestyle, the first thing to look at is obesity, which is a very important risk factor for diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. Many studies have shown that diabetes patients and obesity are closely related, obesity, especially abdominal obesity, once the risk of diabetes will increase by 6-20 times.
And as obesity increases, the risk of diabetes rises further. Secondly, exercise, if regular and reasonable sports, to maintain the body’s function in a very good state, or to increase the body’s muscle mass, reduce the amount of fat, will be a very good means to prevent and reduce diabetes.
Doctors advocate avoiding a sedentary lifestyle and getting regular blood sugar screenings to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. In the event of related glucose metabolism abnormalities, or pre-diabetes, timely intervention can prevent the progression of diabetes. Therefore, although there are certain genetic factors in the occurrence of diabetes, if you adhere to the correct and reasonable healthy lifestyle, you can greatly reduce the risk of diabetes.
